September 11 & 12th, 1999...
"Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay"

Above: the Radisson Hotel Berkeley Marina,
lodging of choice for the 1999 NCKCC show.

The NCKCC's annual "Bash-by-the-Bay" handcrafted automobile concourse takes place every September, on the east side of San Francisco Bay in San Leandro (although this year it was held in Berkeley). Above, in the foreground, is a red 250GT0 Spyder by VR Engineering.

NCKCC member Lynn Reed of Fairfield, California showed off his Ford 460" V8-powered 1935 Auburn Speedster replica. You can see automotive writer/photographer extraordinaire Dan Burrill in the background (far left).

André Capella of Shingle Springs, California and his "McManta"; beside him in the white T-shirt (Classic Roadsters builder/owner) Joel Heinke of Castro Valley, California.

1954 Curtis 500-S Roadster replica--justifiably proud possession of Marty & Bette Rosenthal of Daly City, California. It's a loaded deck, with a ±500hp supercharged Ford 351 Windsor bolted to a 5-speed Tremec.

That's John Knebel of Novato and his GlassPar G-2. He originally built it in 1953. The oldest donor components on it are the 1937 Lincoln bumpers. It's now outfitted with a 3.8L Buick V6 and a GM 350 Turbohydramatic. The hot-linked photo at right links to a hi-rez photo of the car.

This dazzling Testarossa replica is the possession of Dale McCormick of Fremont, California. Powertrain: GM V6 and a 5-speed.

A stable of Solid Sterlings on display. That's (SS's) Mike McBride's personal drivin' machine in the foreground.

...and in the reptile department...

A convention of snakes. That's Marty & Julie Krueger's (Reno, Nevada) Butler Cobra in the foreground. There were dozens of Cobra replicas at the show, with representation by (alphabetically-arranged) Butler, Emerson Motorsports, Classic Roadsters, MidStates, Factory Five... a lineup choreographed by ever-charming Mike & Valerie Senior (citizens?), Superformance, et al.

Above: wine-colored Emerson Cobra coachwork atop a Herb Adams backbone chassis; built by Dave Jones, it took the 1st Place--Cobra award.

And a special set of surprises from Emerson Motorsports; all of these images are hot-linked to higher-rez images. Make sure you check out the snake in hi-rez...

This customer cockpit is outfitted with a touch of class. That dashboard is genuine walnut burlwood.

A very nicely-executed hood scoop... but it's the underside of the scoop that's really, shall we say, striking...

Emerson's routine (i.e., dazzling) engine and stainless-steel firewall.

A spooky scoop...

This marvelous "underbonnet artwork" (by Chris Pitt) on an Emerson Motorsports Cobra was the undisputed crowd-stopper of the show.

After-show commentary by the NCKCC's Vern Hance:

On September 11th and 12th, the Berkeley Marina ferry pier was filled with a beautiful assortment of Handcrafted cars with the overflow extending into the adjacent parking lot. The official car count was 68 vehicles ranging from bare Ferrari body shells, and running Cobras sans bodies, to vintage Aztec restorations, classic Auburns, Mercedes, Ferraris and lots of Cobras. Factory Five Cobras dominated the scene with at least 10 cars on hand but Superformance, Emerson Cobra and NAF were also represented. Also there were Cobra replica "look alikes" such as the Datsun Z based Tomahawk and the Goben Cobra based on a Cadillac Cimarron.

The weather was pretty cooperative. Wind was moderate and the overcast was persistent until at least noon each day. But that was good for photographers who prosper in soft-filtered lighting. A light jacket felt just right most of the time, unless you got very active at which time a tee shirt was fine.

We couldn't get a good count on the spectators, but I'm sure there were over a thousand people who passed through the show over the two days.

Saturday at the close of the day we enjoyed a glass of champagne complemented with cheese, crackers and salami and of course invited a critique of the day's activities with the other show participants.

The evening banquet started at 6:30pm at His Lordships restaurant but many came early to enjoy the fog obscuring the view of San Francisco from our private room facing the Golden Gate.

Leanne Jones (as promised) had door prizes that seemed inexhaustible. The dinner featured three entrees with plenty of supporting dishes so I heard of no one suffering hunger pangs until well into the next day.

The awards were presented Sunday at about 3 p.m. to the many worthy cars on display. The complete roster is shown below.

Special thanks to those who brought their cars. We couldn't have done it without you. We also say thanks to the many club members who have worked for many months to make this show possible. And, of course, thanks to all of you who showed up to visit the show and make it a rewarding experience for all of us in the NCKCC!
