KitCar.com's showcase of the 1996 NCKCC Concours

The Northern California Kit Car Club's annual (September) carshow is one of the industry's less-publicized and underrated motorcar concours. By its spectacular location alone... situated alongside San Francisco Bay at the El Torito Restaurant in San Leandro... and by the predictably splendid bay-area weather, it's one of the industry's most enjoyable carshows.

The photographs for this photo feature were shot by Vern Hance
of the NCKCC, and by Curt Scott. Enjoy and savor!

This is the scenery adjoining the carshow area. The building at the top left of the photo is Horatio's Seafood House; on the right is the Marina Hotel, where most of the carshow participants and visitors stay for the weekend.

Below is a sampling of the machines at the 1996 show:

This dazzling Porsche 914 conversion (the "Bravossa" by Fiber Jet Industries) proved to be one of the most photogenic cars at the show. Tim & Nettie Figuhr of Fiber Jet were there, as always, to cheerfully answer any and all questions about their firm's extensive array of dune buggies and Porsche 911 & 914 body conversion kits. Great folks, fine fiberglass craftsmanship!

Brinton Jones' (Fremont, California) equally resplendent Manta Montage took the "2nd Place for Sports Cars over $20,000."

Joel Heinke's (Castro Valley, California) Guardsman Blue CRL Cobra took the "3rd Place" trophy among an array of stiff Cobra competition.

John Washington's (Velo Rossa Engineering, Tempe, Arizona) debuted his all-new "Subtle Z" aerodynamics package, which very nicely provides an upscale, aggressive stance to Datsun/Nissan Z-cars (240Z, 260Z, 280Z).

This magnificent BRG & silver Sceptre (Bob Londagin, Pleasanton, California) took 1) "Best of Show," 2) "1st Place--Classic over $20,000," and 3) "Most Unique." Deservedly so on all counts... this is a crowd-stopping motorcar.

Here's "Mad Hatter" Bill Landers (who always commandeers the prize for "Most Bizarre Headgear") awards the 3rd Place trophy for "Classics under $10,000" to Paul King, for his 1929 Mercedes SSK replica.

Vern & Carol Hance's Classic Factory Mercedes 500K replica was one of the show's top attention- getters. It was one of five gorgeous 500K replicas at the show... and it took "2nd Place--Classic over $20,000."

Many of the show-goers arrived in their own specialty-car transportation, as evidenced by this Sterling, driven to the show (and driven daily) by Shane Williams of San Jose State University)

As with all motorcar club events, the success of the occasion is greatly enhanced by participation of club members... including members of other motorcar clubs. This year, as every year, much of the size and success of the NCKCC show was due to the enthusiastic participation of members of other clubs. Both the AHA (Association of Handcrafted Automobiles) of southern California and the Oregon Handcrafted Automobile Association (including its President Al Bohr) were amply represented, and helped once again to make the NCKCC show a resounding success and great fun for all involved!
