2002

by Curt Scott and Bob McClurg

Only five Knott-ical miles northwest of Disneyland!
27 & 28 April, 2002
Note: Cobra, Daytona Coupe and GT40 show coverage is hotlinked at the bottom of this page.

Above: Left to right, that's Kit Car magazine's Brenda Garcia, then (back to camera) The National Kit Car Club's Dan Campbell, Curt Scott (in the shooting vest), and Kit Car magazine editor Mike Blake (red jacket).

Above: The KBF show as seen from a low-orbiting satellite. Just kidding. The aerial photos you see in this photo-feature were shot by Curt Scott, courtesy of (Buena Park Fire Department's) Dan Mackey, who graciously provided him with a ride up in their 30-meter ladder truck. You're viewing the show from the north end of the parking lot, looking south, as the show was still being set up. You can see KBF's replica of the Independence Hall Building just to the right of top center, projecting into the sky. You can also get a glimpse of Beach Boulevard at the far right. Most of the amusement park is off the photo, west of Beach Blvd., although you can see the Xcelerator roller coaster in the distance.

above: the A.H.A.'s main event booth, alongside CobraCountry's and kitcar.com's booth. You can observe folks donning jackets and sweaters in the Saturday photos; on Sunday the Donnerwetter cleared up and revealed the usual wonderful southern California clear skies.

On your left: former A.H.A. Prez Dan Barbee asking for directions to the next hole (or, perhaps, seeking assistance from a higher source)...

Superformance

new S1 Roadster, which bears striking aesthetic and performance resemblances to Colin Chapman's famed Super 7.

Dale Bates

(Sacramento) and his Intermeccanica Speedster. Dale's Speedster was one of the very finest repro sports cars at the entire 2002 show. The photo at left is hotlinked to a closeup view of that original 1955 Porsche steering wheel and the cockpit.

Bonnie & Clyde

This '33 Vicky boasts a GM 'ZZ-4' 350 hp powerplant with a B&M 700R automatic tranny. The chassis features Ford IFS and 4-bar rear setup. The coachwork boasts DuPont 'Ruby Red' 2-stage clearcoat paint with graphics added by Herb Martinez of Livermore.

Velo Rossa

(VR Engineering) was there with two of these striking GT0 replicas. Based upon a '70s ("Datsun"/ Nissan) Z-car, it performs as well as it looks. Photo at left is hotlinked to VR's website.

Ultima Sports

was there with two of their Can-Am roadsters. Although we phoned 'em for detailed information we could provide you with here, they never bothered to call us back.

Triangle G
(Steve & John Terterian)

displayed this magnificent exoticar roadster replica. Looks like it's spreading its wings to take off. Photo at right is hotlinked to Triangle G's new website.

Vintage Spyders

was there with an entire lineup of Spyders and Speedsters.

Shades of Duelin' Banjos... that banjo steering wheel is a pricey option... but worth every penny! Photo at left is hotlinked to Vintage Spyder's website.

In just this one zoom-in shot you can spot: a yellow '27 Track T Ford roadster, a (Brazilian-made) red Puma, a Stutz Bearcat, a black Intermeccanica Porsche Speedster replica, a Dune Buggy, a Cobra roadster, two 308 Ferrari replicas, two Magnum GTs (246 Dino Ferrari replicas), two GT40 replicas, and no fewer than FIVE 1934 500K Mercedes roadster replicas.

Topgun

was there with this yellow "Callista" exoticar roadster. Photo at left is hotlinked to Topgun's website.

NAERC

(North American Exotic Replica Cars) displayed one of the nicest exoticars at the show, with crowd continuously engulfing it. It was awarded the show's prestigious "President's Choice Award." Photo at right is hotlinked to NAERC's website.

Beck

Chuck & Glede Beck were there, along with Kevin Hines (and his Beck-affiliated firm Special Editions, Inc.). Kevin was showing off their new 356 Speedster replica, featured a few photos below).

Lizard wizard Jim Michaud's multiple-award-winning "Chameleon"... a show-stealer at every event it shows up for. This Wundercar started out its existence as a D&R Replicars Python 2000.

Rodster

Henry Caroselli (Caroselli Designs) was there with his award-winning "Rodster" S-10 body conversions.

Urban Gorilla
Calgary, Alberta Canada

Darcy Hrychiw's (don't ask) Urban Gorilla... one of the very nicest Hummer-styled offroad machines we've encountered.

Special Editions, Inc.

Kevin Hines has been around the replicar industry since Moses parted his red hair (have I got that right?).

At Knott's 2002 he (Kevin, not Moses) introduced this imported (and very attractive) 356 Speedster replica.

This photo shows a sampling of the Auburn Speedsters and Cord 810s at the show.

Ken Curtiss' spectacular MG-TD replica. No one's quite certain why he's displaying the portraits of Valerie Harper, Jack Klugman, et al. on his front bumper. But rumour has it that those are actually notches... a photographic representation of spares & splits (celebs) he's bowled over on Rodeo Drive...

Richard Cosentino ("The Shoppe") in Thatcher, Arizona displayed this spiffy '29 Ford roadster replica. Cosentino assembles all sorts of kit cars, Cobras and street rods.

CalSpyder

Precision Design & Engineering was there this year with a roadster-in-progress, just to show folks all the good stuff that lurks under the skin of their CalSpyder. Photo at left is hotlinked to CalSpyder's website.

Indy Cycles

Sport Vehicles LLC/Jim Musser was there with this 'green machine' hi-tech three-wheeler. It's a pre-assembled Formula 1-styled body/chassis kit that can you can bolt up the donor parts from just about any donor motorcycle.

This "Woodster" is the (justifiably) proud creation of Gary & Terry O'Connor of Santa Rosa, California. They're both members of the NCKCC and also the Empire Sports Car Association, which is based in Santa Rosa. Gary wrote:

Our "Woodster" boasts a redwood strip body (it really is from our back fence), is powered by a '68 Corvair engine, and has been in our family for 25 years. I built it in 1977-'78 and drove it to New York City in 1980. Over the next several years we autocrossed it, rallied with it and toured it all over the western US. My eldest son helped restore it in '96-'97 and he and I did the AmeriCruise in 2000, driving to Lincoln (Nebraska), Denver (Colorado), Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) and back home to Santa Rosa.

Boyd Coddington

was there, their booth displaying their wheels, a couple of Cobra replicas, and Boyd's own '32 roadster variant (the "Boydster"); the photo at right is hotlinked to a closeup view of that roadster.

The Purloined Powerplant

We happened upon Fiber Jet's Tim Figuhr employing his trusty California Duster to restore the glisten to his Cobra's clearcoat (darned near invisible) finish. Note how well it performed to polish his hood scoop. Tim, um, you're supposed to remove the protective sleeve.

But all was not going well in Mudv... make that Roseville. You see, during the show a truly tumultuous event occurred with his beloved Cobra replica; it all began when we asked Tim to open his hood so we could photograph his thundering powerplant. Click here for a quick glimpse at this wrenching (if'n you'll pardon the intended pun) human interest story.

This year, just like last year, on Saturday the AHA's KBF show was out-of-the-ordinary in one key respect: cool temperatures, overcast sky... and thus splendid photography weather! As a result, Bob McClurg and I shot nearly 1,100 photos! Thus on the three pages of this article you'll encounter over 60 photos from the show.

Dale Bates

(of Sacramento) for one of the very finest Porsche 356 Speedster replicas ever to be displayed at the Knott's show. An Intermeccanica, it's featured above someplace.

Steve Terteryan

(Triangle G) with one of the trophys he took home for his magnificent black exoticar replica.

Vern Hance

(of the NCKCC) at his camcorder, dutifully capturing on digital video the awards presentations. Vern's videotape of the entire show will be available within a few weeks. If you'd like to get yourself a copy of his show video, send him an email and let him know:
